Shop owner's son stirring in a sweet syrup into a puffed rice dessert which is smoothed and flattened into the large pan/table, and cut before it hardens too much. It is exported locally to Malaysia, about 7 miles from here.

The shop where we stopped for a delicious lunch of noodles. As we visited, she surprised us by taking us through her home and restaurant to show us her "puffed rice dessert" business. Note how close it is to the road.

A container of Mangosteen (nothing like a mango) picked by the lady in the tree. These are FANTASTIC, and are nearing the end of the season. Apparently they may be found in the states at a high price.

Latex dripping from the tree into the container, about the same size as half a coconut shell. This part of the process is VERY labor intensive.

  1. I am thoroughly enjoying your blog! Thanks for the wonderful descriptions. My mouth is watering as I hear about these foods. Have you eaten a sweet red bean curry that is cooked inside bamboo? I can still taste that.
We got a call from AFS today asking if we could find a home for a young man from Thailand who is coming in Aug. and needs a home. He is very active in scouting in Thailand. Tempting!
Can't wait to sit and talk with you!
    Love, Nancy
